Forever 21

We are heading home today. It’s the end of a wonderful few days in Colorado.

And I am nostalgic. Sitting here, sipping coffee, thinking back on the last few days … hanging out with my 21 year old daughter, Emily, and her delightful friends.

Yesterday, we were downtown … for the anticipated trip to the candy store. And while there, I was startled by how quickly Emily’s face seemed to change.

One minute, I could see her face just as she was when she was a toddler. Full of mischief. And fun.

Then the very next minute, she transformed and all I saw was her 21 year old face …

Enjoying her ice cream, I was flushed with memories of her childhood …

With her friends, all grown up again …

She has been coming to Estes Park since she was just a child …

But she is no longer a child …

On days like today, especially today … I wish she could stay forever twenty-one. But that’s just the mom in me. I can’t turn back time. I can’t make life stand still. I can’t make her forever twenty-one.

So, I’ll take today. And I’ll squeeze out the joy.

I thank God for all the sweet memories … those now past … and those yet to come.

Hi Susie- what a sweet post!! And so glad you have a wonderful time. I had a nostalgic moment this morning at the OB’s office (of all places). I took my 3-year-old daughter and she sat up on the table with me. As I listened to the heartbeat of the baby I’m carrying, I teared up thinking about how it was just four years ago when my baby girl was inside of me. I looked at her eyes and how far she’s come and I just couldn’t believe how much God has given me. Anyway, your blog is such an inspiration! Thanks for the great posts and beautiful pictures!

Oh, I so understand completely what you are saying. It’s such a bittersweet time. My children are 23 and 19. I so miss them as babies and young children but wouldn’t hold them back from growing up for anything. I have to remind myself to enjoy the times we have now and to also enjoy the memories.

This is a beautiful post with beautiful pictures. I especially love the last one of the two of you (I’m assuming that’s you?) :)
I could identify with your post soooo much. I have been experiencing much of the same feelings since my children are 18, 16, and 13 years old. I have many of those deja vu moments that leave me with tears in my eyes and longing in my heart.
I guess change is hard for all of us moms! :)
    Be Blessed~

Hey Susie! I was thinkin’ about you last night as I was having some Cheez-its and Merlot (actually it was Zinfandel, but whatever) and realized I hadn’t been by here in too long. What a great day to visit -I love this! I’ve been missing the little boy my 19 year old used to be so much lately. You get me every time.

What a sweet post, and what a sweet daughter you have. I have two boys and already I look back at their baby pics and can’t believe how much they have grown. Our kids are such blessings, aren’t they?
