Favorites Friday :: Straws & Roses

My parents were green when green wasn’t cool. My dad is a tree hugger from way back. He planted trees all over Austin without permission in the 70′s … including a baby cottonwood in front of Murchison that ended up being part of a big ole God story for me. More on that later.

And my mom, why she had these coolio sterling straws for us growing up. The eco-kind Oprah likes. I don’t know where my mom got them. Probably in Acapulco. That was a fun thing to do in the 60′s and 70′s.  All I do know is that they are a serious favorite of mine. So much so that I have a whole collection of faux sterling straws. (Stainless straws.) Not nearly as neat as the Acapulco sterling straws.

I had originally planned on talking about my favorite roses. [Read more...]

Favorites Friday: Flipped

Have you seen this movie? My friend, Roxann, recommended it and I’m smitten. Maybe it’s because of the tree. I love trees. Matter of fact, my God story is called Once Upon a Tree …

Or maybe because it’s a tender story is about a girl and a boy. (And a tree.)  [Read more...]

The Staves {favorites friday}

Oh, dear.

Last week, I went on and on about my song jag issues and I honestly thought that would be the end of it. But that was before last night …

My girls and I went to the Austin’s Paramount Theatre last night to see The Civil Wars. I’ve had a long-standing affection for their music and Joy’s story. But gracious, gracious, gracious ~ their opening act was new to me.

Have you met The Staves? (No video in feed? Click here.)

I keep listening and listening to these sisters. Downloaded their new EP: Mexico. Good news is, you can get a free download here. It’s a recording of The Staves live …

It’s definitely worth the address share.

Next week, I promise to branch out.

Unless.

I meet some new music that might make you smile.

Favorites Friday: songs & shows

Just like toddlers get on food jags, I get on song jags. I listen over and over until the song sits quiet in my soul, every word pressed deep down inside.

That is what happened with Jillian Edward’s new song No Other Plans.

Favorites Friday: eating healthy

Since writing and following The 21 Day Fast Diet, I have found some life-saving favorites. Out of necessity really. It happens like this … there is a dilemma, like the meat fast phase. That was a real dilemma for me. I was terrified of carbo-loading because I am not a huge fan of vegetarian options. But because I wanted to follow the whole fasting phase, I tried a lot of new things.

Like this Eat Well Enjoy Life Edamame Hummus I found at Central Market. I LOVE it. Love it. Adore it. Eat it daily.

I mean, who are these  genius people? Making edamame hummus taste like a lite avocado dip? I want to hug them. [Read more...]

Barista. Habit.

Two all important things have happened in the last several weeks.

1. I became a barista.

2. I broke a habit.

Barista.

I am not a professional but my teenager does not seem to care. Because every morning she gets up and says, “Mom, can you make me an espresso?” And I reply, “Of course. I am a barista, baby.”

I pick a mug. I touch a few buttons. The machine hums a few bars in the key of C (my teenager informed me ~ she is a genius music freak) and then the crema delight appears in the cup. Isn’t it gorgeous … ?

A Few Favorite Things …

Confessions … once I fall in love with something, I get completely manic about it.*

I talk about it, share it, and hope the whole human race will enjoy it just as much as I do.  So when I read about the good goings on over at Nesting Place … I was all in. I love sharing my favorites ~ and actually have a Favorite Things category where I share the stuff I love.  For today’s ‘favorite things’ linky party, I pulled a few things from my amazon favorites. Wouldn’t mind any of these showing up in my stocking!

Candles. I have lots of favorites. But this candle is so divine. And this candle is hard to find. I met this candle in Waco, Texas at Roots. Roots is a favorite thing. Emily loves Roots and I love Emily. [Read more...]

Fearless :: simple thanksgiving

Fear never wrote a symphony or poem, negotiated a peace treaty, or cured a disease. Fear never pulled a family out of poverty or a country out of bigotry. Fear never saved a marriage or a business.
